Gourmet Weekend, Gourmet Husband

This weekend Andrew cooked up a storm of deliciousness from a few recipes from this month's issue of Gourmet magazine. Flank steak sandwiches and a candied fennel cake. Wow, they were both so good--get down good, as my sister would say. Andrew's definitely the chef of the family, whereas I'm the sous chef and sometimes prep cook. This weekend, though, I didn't do anything but eat the food. I kept offering to help, asking what I could do, but he was flying solo in the kitchen. No co-pilot needed, not even for clean-up (lucky me). I cook too, but not as often or as well. He also makes more time-consuming and adventurous dishes than I would even consider. Once, he made a spare rib dish that took three days and required cleaning the whole kitchen about 5 times. These two recipes weren't as involved and they were both great, especially the fennel cake. YUM. It was so hard not to gobble the whole thing down. I had to save a piece for Caroline, who is a great cook and often makes amazing dishes from Gourmet magazine recipes. She said she was going to make this one too.

I'm more likely to bake something. The Gourmet magazine cover reminded me that I haven't blogged about our picnic last weekend when we went to the park with friends. I made strawberry shortcake with heart shaped shortcakes. As I was making the biscuits, I thought of Alicia's heart shaped biscuits on her chicken pot pie (and her heart shaped pancakes, and her heart shaped waffles), which I can't find on her blog right now, but they're there somewhere, looking cute. Mine were cute too.

Lucky you! My partner's idea of cooking is opening a can. I love the heart shaped biscuits. Strawberry shortcake is one of my favorite things!
