Tokyo's Fabric Town

Yesterday I went to the garment district, aka Fabric Town. If I added up all the fabric stores I've ever been to and all the types of fabrics I've seen in those stores, it wouldn't come close to what I saw yesterday--in one day, on one street. It was overwhelming. Just in one store, Tomato, I was stunned. 6 floors of fabric heaven. Yuki told me about this store and even printed a cute map for me. Tomato did not disappoint. In fact, after about two hours I had to leave because I think I was having a fabric anxiety attack. I wanted everything and didn't know where to start. I will go back though. By the time I got to Tomato I had already been into about a half dozen other fabric stores so I was a little tired already. I can only take in so much! Here are a few pictures from Tomato. It was hard to get some good pictures of the cute Japanese prints as they were all stacked on huge bolts and the store was jammed packed with people--just like every other place I've been here. So many people! I only got a few remnants because I wasn't sure if I could get a quarter or a half yard. I tried to ask two people, but they couldn't understand me, and I couldn't understand them, so I will ask Yuki since she's been there. If you want to read more about Tomato, this blogger has some great info and pictures.

They have a ton of soft cotton jersey fabrics in solids and stripes.

Polka dots! I get excited if I find just the right dot on base color combo I'm looking for. Here they have just about any color combination you can think of.

Reversible checks and dots. I wanted some of every color.

Here are all the remnant packs I got. They are so cute! Soon they will be party hats. Click on the pictures to see them larger.

All I can say is that I am so green with envy right now! Glad you're having fun and can't wait to see all the things you create with your finds!

I'm glad you made it!! The system they have is pretty much the same, but the only difference is they go by meter, not yard. 1 meter is a little bit over a yard. Most of the store starts from 1/2 meter... or sometimes 10 cm. when you say "meter", try "may-toru".

Leigh,
You must be brimming over with inspiration! I bet you were designing little party hats in your dreams all night last night. I can hardly wait to see them. It all looks amazing. I'm glad you are having such a great time.
